Law no. 35/2008- Amending the electoral law no. 35/2008 so as to eliminate all obstacles, be they administrative or otherwise, which may prevent Romanian citizens from exercising their fundamental right to vote or to be voted into office.

It is imperative to introduce postal voting for the Romanians who are located in areas which are not serviced by voting stations (e.g. Vancouver, British Columbia, where a significant number of Romanian citizens have never exercised this right!) or who will not be present, at the time of voting, at the address stipulated in their identification cards.

At the same time, the provision demanding that 2000 signatures be gathered for an independent candidate is too prohibitive of a requirement for a candidate who comes from the Diaspora. The number of signatures required should be made proportional to the potential constituency of every college, as previously done.

Similarly, one must remove absurd bureaucratic obstacles such as the exaggerated number of certified copies of declarations needed to register a candidate, along with the necessity of presenting these declarations in person at the Central Electoral Office, when modern methods can be used to identify the candidate and his or her declarations, and to transmit all the necessary paperwork while avoiding unnecessary spending.
